Descending Order 5% CMAT type of Questions

These questions ask you to arrange numbers, fractions, chronological events, or process steps in a specific order. They appear in Quant (comparing roots/fractions) and Entrepreneurship (ordering stages of a startup). The mistake students make is calculating the exact value of every item or trying to sort the entire list from 1 to 5. This takes too much time and increases the error rate.

G Strategy for Match the Following MCQs:

  • The “Extremes” Method: Do not sort the middle items. Focus only on finding the Highest/First and the Lowest/Last item.
    • In Quant: Compare just the first two fractions. If A < B, look at the options and eliminate any option where A comes after B.
    • In Verbal/GK: Identify the very first event (e.g., “Childhood” must come before “Adulthood”). Look for options that start with the corresponding letter.
  • The “Option Comparison” Trick: Don’t solve the sequence yourself. Let the options do the work. If two options start with A and two start with C, compare only A and C. Which one comes first? If A comes first, you instantly eliminate the C-options.
  • The “Benchmark” Approx: For weird numbers like (6√5)² vs (4√3)², don’t calculate decimals. Square the numbers! (6√5)² = 36 × 5 = 180. (4√3)² = 16 × 3 = 48. 180 is clearly larger than 48. Comparing squares is faster than comparing roots.
CMAT 2025 Slot 1 – Ordering Questions

CMAT 2025 Slot 1: Ordering Based Questions

4. Arrange the following in descending order:
(A) \( 3^{3^{3^{3}}} \)
(B) \( 3^{(33)^{3}} \)
(C) \( (3^{3})^{33} \)
(D) \( 3333 \)

  1. \( A > B > D > C \)
  2. \( B > A > D > C \)
  3. \( B = C > A > D \)
  4. \( A > C = D > B \)
Correct Option: A
Rationale:
A = \( 3^{(3^{27})} \) (Power is huge: \( 3^{27} \approx 7.6 \times 10^{12} \))
B = \( 3^{35937} \) (Exponent is ~36,000)
C = \( 3^{99} \) (Exponent is 99)
D = 3333 (Base number)
Clearly, A is the largest by far, followed by B. C is \( 3^{99} \) which is far larger than 3333 (D).
15. Arrange the following in descending order:
(A) \( \sqrt{3}-\sqrt{2} \)
(B) \( \sqrt{4}-\sqrt{3} \)
(C) \( \sqrt{5}-\sqrt{4} \)
(D) \( \sqrt{2}-1 \)

  1. \( A > B > C > D \)
  2. \( D > C > B > A \)
  3. \( D > A > B > C \)
  4. \( A > C > B > D \)
Correct Option: C
Rationale:
A ≈ 1.732 – 1.414 = 0.318
B ≈ 2 – 1.732 = 0.268
C ≈ 2.236 – 2 = 0.236
D ≈ 1.414 – 1 = 0.414
Descending Order: D (0.414) > A (0.318) > B (0.268) > C (0.236).

  3. C, A, B, D, E
  4. C, A, D, E, B
Correct Option: D
Rationale: The logical flow of the legal process is: Crime (C) occurs -> Police (A) investigate -> Case goes to Court (D) -> Court gives Judgement (E) -> Punishment (B) is awarded.
53. Rearrange the following components to get a meaningful sentence:
(A) of an old and infirm sanyasi
(B) Ravana came in the form
(C) and lifting Sita along with
(D) put her on his chariot

  1. B, A, C, E, D
  2. D, E, C, A, B
  3. A, B, C, D, E
  4. E, D, C, B, A
Correct Option: A
Rationale: (B) Ravana came in the form -> (A) of an old and infirm sanyasi -> (C) and lifting Sita along with -> (E) the piece of ground on which she stood -> (D) put her on his chariot.

  1. D, A, C, B
  2. B, A, D, C
  3. C, B, D, A
  4. A, B, C, D

CMAT 2025 Slot 2: Ordering Questions

8. What value comes in place of (?) and arrange in descending order:
(A) 5/9 × (225.4 – 45.4) = (?)²
(B) √1024 × 40 + (20)² + 0.5% of 9600 + 469 = (?)³
(C) 8¹² ÷ 16² of 32³ × √256 = (2)^?
(D) 18 1/3 + 9 2/3 – 10 1/3 = 1 2/3 + ?

  1. D > C > A > B
  2. C > A > B > D
  3. D > C > B > A
  4. C > D > B > A
Correct Option: D
Calculations:
A: 5/9 * 180 = 100 = 10². (?) = 10
B: 32*40 + 400 + 48 + 469 = 2197 = 13³. (?) = 13
C: Powers of 2 → (2³)^12 ÷ (2^4)^2 of (2^5)^3 × 2^4. Solving indices gives 2^17. (?) = 17
D: (18+9-10) + (1/3+2/3-1/3) = 17 2/3. Subtracting 1 2/3 gives 16. (?) = 16
Order: C(17) > D(16) > B(13) > A(10).
16. Arrange the following in descending order:
(A) √401 – √399
(B) √301 – √299

  1. C > A > B > D
  2. D > C > B > A
  3. C > B > A > D
  4. C > D > B > A
Correct Option: D
Rationale:
For terms like √(n+2) – √n, the value decreases as ‘n’ increases.
Logic: (√401 – √399) = 2 / (√401 + √399). Larger denominator = Smaller value.
Smallest numbers have largest value: C (100s) > D (200s) > B (300s) > A (400s).
