Statement I vs II 7% CMAT Actual Question Type

Statement I vs II 7% in CMAT Type of Questions

These questions are essentially two independent True/False questions bundled into one. Unlike “Assertion & Reasoning,” there is no causal link (no “because”) to verify. Your only task is to determine the factual accuracy of each statement individually. These appear frequently in Quant (testing theorems) and Innovation/GK (testing definitions and facts).

G Strategy for Statement I & II:

  • The “Split & Kill” Protocol: Never try to judge both statements at once. Read Statement I first.
    • If Statement I is False, you immediately eliminate Option 1 (Both True) and Option 3 (Stat I is True). You are now left with a 50/50 probability between Option 2 and Option 4.
    • This “binary elimination” drastically increases your odds even if you are unsure about Statement II.
  • The “Extreme Modifier” Hack (Verbal/Innovation): In theory-based questions, scan for extreme words.
    • Statements containing “Always,” “Never,” “Must,” “All,” or “Only” are highly likely to be FALSE.
    • Statements containing “Can,” “May,” “Typically,” “Generally,” or “Some” are highly likely to be TRUE.
  • The “Math Theorem” Check: In Quant, Statement I & II questions often test specific properties (e.g., “Sum of opposite angles in a cyclic quadrilateral is 180°”). If you know the theorem, these are the fastest marks in the section. If you don’t, use the “Example Method”—draw a rough figure or plug in simple numbers (e.g., radius = 7) to check if the statement holds up.

Example from CMAT: “Pivoting always involves changing the target market” (Likely False because “always” is too restrictive).

13. In a race A, B and C take part. A beats B by 30 meters, B beats C by 20 meters and A beats C by 48 meters.
Statement I: The length of the race is 300 meters.
Statement II: The speed of A, B and C are in the ratio 50:45:40.
  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Correct Option: C

Ratio of speeds = Ratio of distances covered in same time.
A:B = 300:270 = 10:9.
B:C = 300:280 = 15:14.
Combined Ratio A:B:C = 150 : 135 : 126. This simplifies to 50 : 45 : 42. (Statement II is False, as it claims 40).
